Unbroken Voices, Sita Kimya

Unbroken Voices, Sita Kimya

Overview

This project disseminates research from the the Managing Time project through a
participatory documentary film focusing on the resilience and stories of survivors of sexual violence in
Kenya. The film amplifies survivors’ voices while challenging harmful social perceptions that contribute to ongoing trauma.

The film employs a participatory methodology, led by the Survivors of Sexual Violence
in Kenya Network and the Wangu Kanja Foundation, and Professor Heather Flowe, with a team of
filmmakers from the University of Kenyatta. This approach empowers survivors by creating space for them to share their experiences, strengths and concerns whilst eliminating oppressive stereotypes and stigma. The film documents survivors’ experiences of harm stemming not only from the violence itself but also from inadequate legal and social responses.
